Haircut

If you’re like most first-time parents - you’ve been dreading the first haircut. It doesn’t seem like it should be such a big deal - just a trim here and a clip over there - but Baby’s first experience with the scissors can be a little tricky. Here are some tips to help make it easier:

Find a stylist who has a rapport with children. This does not describe every stylist! The one you choose should have experience handling babies.

Bring your child to the salon before the appointment. It might be a good idea to bring them when you’re having your own hair cut - so they can get used to the environment. This will minimize the risk of your child feeling threatened at the hair appointment.

Take a bag of tricks to the salon. Pack a snack - bring a favorite book - anything to distract or hold the attention!

Depending on the age of your baby - you might consider holding them while they gets their hair cut.

Don’t simply thrust the experience on your child. Take time to introduce the stylist and their equipment to your child. Let them see the cape - the bottle - and the comb. Easing your baby into the haircut will help it to go more smoothly.

You might want to ask the stylist to start with a hair conditioner - especially if your baby has long hair. This will eliminate most of the tangles that might cause an unwanted pinch.

While there is no 'right' age for a first haircut - it might be time if you notice your child’s hair looking ragged at the ends. Or - if your baby is constantly messing with their hair - pushing it out of their eyes or off their neck - it might be time to call a stylist.

When consulting with the stylist about which hair style is best for your child - keep convenience in mind. You probably won’t be spending time on your child’s hair every day - so it will be prudent to have an easy-to-maintain cut.

Once it’s been cut - it’s time for maintenance. Don’t over-wash! Unless it’s got something awful in it - you only need to wash your baby’s hair twice a week. Using a detangler and a tear-free shampoo will make bath time much easier!
