Bathing A Cat

Bathing a cat is one of life’s challenges - requiring patience and stamina. Luckily - most cats will never have to take a bath. However - in case of pet allergies {bathing a cat can reduce allergens} or events involving your cat falling into a toilet or angering a skunk - you might have to face up to the challenge.

The younger your cat - the easier it will probably be to bathe it - even on a regular basis. But if you think you might not have the patience to handle a soaking - angry cat - enlisting the help of a pet grooming service is likely a good idea. If you decide to tough it out by yourself - though - make sure you assemble your gear before you begin: clean towels - cat shampoo and conditioner - nail clippers - cotton balls - cat brush and comb - and of course - the cat.

Be subtle about accumulating your supplies. Cats are smart - and they know when you’re up to something. If you’re not careful - your cat will run and hide. If you’re sneaky enough - once you get started - clean your cat’s ears and inspect for parasites. Use the nail clippers to trim your cat’s claws.

Use the cat brush to remove extra fur and any mats or items that may be trapped in the fur. Brush gently - as cats have delicate skin. While you’re brushing - you can also observe your cat’s skin for any problems or abnormalities - such as rashes - fleas - or open sores. Once you’re finished - it’s time to run the water for the bath.

Lukewarm water is best for a cat bath - since hot water can dry a cat’s sensitive skin. Avoid using a shower head - because cats find this threatening. Fill the tub with enough water to cover the cat’s feet. Place the cat in the tub - talking in a soothing manner - and block its way out. Hopefully - the cat will settle down - but if not - you will have to hold him.

Avoid getting water in your cat’s ears. This can disrupt the pH balance in the ear canal and make your cat prone to infection. Carefully soap your cat with the shampoo and perform a tender - soothing massage. Once the shampoo has been worked over the cat’s whole body - pour a cup of water over the cat to rinse off the shampoo. Rinse a second time to ensure no unseen shampoo is left behind - shampoo residue can cause skin irritation. Apply the conditioner - if you are using it.

Once the rinsing is complete - run your hand over the cat’s back and sides to lightly remove excess water. Then - pat dry with a clean towel. Try to avoid rubbing - as this may irritate the skin or mat the fur. Your cat may try to shake off the water - have the towel ready! You’ll also want to make sure your cat doesn’t get chilled during the drying process. You can run a blow dryer on a cool setting to help speed up the drying process if your cat doesn’t mind the noise. Never use a hot setting - as this could dry out your cat’s skin or even burn him.

Once the bath is over - shower your cat with love - affection - and treats. This will assure him that he was a good cat and that you still care for him. Also - a treat will help keep your cat from resenting you for such a tough experience. Treats are essential - especially if you plan to bathe your cat on a regular basis.
